Edward Steichen

Edward Steichen was a self-taught American photographer who began taking pictures in 1895.  His background was in painting and drawing, which may have accounted for his pictorialist-style approach to photography.  During the height of his career in the 1920s and 30s, while working for Vogue and Vanity Fair (among others), he became one of the most famous (and famously highest-paid) photographers in the world.  He was also one of the first U.S. photographers to use the Autochrome Lumiere process (one of the earliest ways to create color photos).
